The interchange of I-435 at Front Street has become increasingly congested. MoDOT has
considered several concepts to realign and improve the interchange, but conventional designs
have not provided the level of service designers seek.
An unusual solution may hold the answer. The proposed concept will improve the interchange
at Front Street and the street from Universal Avenue to Corrington Avenue, changing the segment
beneath the I-435 interchange bridges into a diverging diamond interchange (DDI).
The innovative new alignment will accommodate more traffic in a safe and efficient pattern.
Signals would control crossing traffic beneath the I-435 bridges. Traffic to and from ramps
would be signal controlled and coordinated with the Front Street traffic signals.
