I-470/I-435/71 Interchange Closes in 3-Trails
Repairs to westbound I-470 will be finished by Sept. 15. MoDOT awarded a $4.46 million contract to repair the road collapse to Pyramid Contractors, Inc, a local firm. Pyramid began work at the site last night after a news conference to sign the contract.
This is the fastest and most reliable solution to the problem. Pyramid has begun work quickly and will work diligently to get the interstate reopened as quickly as possible for the more than 60,000 cars that use it each day.
Why did MoDOT close the road?
Engineers at the Missouri Department of Transportation closed the westbound I-470 interchange to westbound I-435, as well as northbound Route 71 to westbound I-435 at 3 Trails Crossing July 17. The damage from a slide that cause the wall to fail and the road to collapse at that location, making it necessary to immediately close the roadway.
How is MoDOT fixing the road?
A new 225-foot bridge extension will be added to the existing stable bridge at that location, replacing the failed road and wall. The bridge columns will be drilled all the way down into the bedrock. This solution avoids the risk that a slide would occur again
