Why is MoDOT doing this project?
Safe & Sound is a multi-faceted program that will improve more than 800 of Missouri’s worst bridges in five years. Safe & Sound will prevent many of the state’s worst bridges from being closed temporarily or permanently for safety reasons.
How does this project benefit me?
The Safe & Sound sign indicates the bridge is in need of repair and will be improved during the five-year Safe & Sound program. Also, a bridge with this sign will most likely be closed during construction to save time and money, so we can improve the most bridges possible.
What is the project time line?
The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission recently selected KTU Constructors to replace 554 bridges across the state in the next four years through a Design-Build contract. Combined with another 248 bridge projects that the Missouri Department of Transportation is completing with innovative contracting methods, Missourians will be driving across 802 new bridges by Oct. 31, 2014.
How is this project funded?
MoDOT will sell bonds to finance the program, repaying them with annual payments of $50 million coming from the Federal bridge funds it receives each year.
